MELBOURNE, Australia – Five of the eight seeds in this half remained – including the two top ones in No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 3 Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev had arguably an easier-than-expected path through Félix Auger-Aliassime in the third round, although his second-round win over Emil Ruusuvuori sort of counted for two on a few levels.
He wass rewarded, in a sense with a matchup against one of the relatively few shockers in the men’s draw – Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Borges was game, but overmatched.
The only winner who had a serious scare was No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev. Who certainly has a puncher’s chance of winning it all – which would be a fine kettle of fish, indeed.
