It was going to be a quick turnaround for some players who only finished their first-round matches on Wednesday – especially those who came back from near-oblivion to pull off a win.

We’re thinking of Thanasi Kokkinakis, who came back from two sets to love against Félix Auger-Aliassime – and ended up having to retire after injuring himself on the court. And of Tomas Machac, who came from way down – and from 0-5 down in the fifth set, to finally eliminate David Goffin.

Only to be eliminated in four sets by Roman Safiullin.

There were, in all, seven five-setters. Making it all that much more impressive that they got through the entire schedule.

Denis Shapovalov got a good second-round matchup in Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. But he still – some of it his own doing – needed five sets to get through. So did Cana-Chilean Alejandro Tabilo. And so both are into the third round.
