And then there is the finale of the Atlanta Open, consigned to the heaven where former U.S. tennis tournaments congregate to compare notes on how it all went wrong.

Canadian Denis Shapovalov took a wild card and began his summer hard-court season a week earlier than planned. It didn’t go as planned.
