Another Masters 1000 is in the books, and while there aren’t any changes at the very top, a lot of players have improved their positions in terms of seeding, and overall.
The results set the seeds for next week’s US Open.
With Djokovic, the defending Cincinnati champion, not playing he finds himself just 100 points ahead of Carlos Alcaraz – who would have passed him with a better result than a loss in his opening match because he, too was defending a lot of points as the finalist.
So Djokovic will be the No. 2 seed.
In the end, there’s no change in the top 10.

Frances Tiafoe (USA): No. 27 =========> No. 20 (With his impressive run in Cincinnati – including coming back from 2-5 in the third set to beat Holger Rune in the semifinals Sunday, Tiafoe is back in the top 20. A renaissance week for the American, who has been through it lately)..
Jack Draper (GBR): No. 28 =========> No. 25 (Draper probably will be remembered more for the end of the match against Félix Auger-Aliassime than the fact that he made the Cincy quarterfinals. But he did, and he’s in the top 25 for the first time in his career).
Jiri Lehecka (CZE): No. 35 =========> No. 32 (Lehecka, who had been out since Madrid, returned last week and got to the third round in Cincinnati. It was enough to move him into the top 32, and that will help his draw in New York).
Nuno Borges (POR): No. 39 =========> No. 35 (A new career high for Borges, who was at a new career high last week, too. He went from the qualifying to the second round in Cincinnati, and will play Thiago Seyboth Wild in Winston-Salem).
Alex Michelsen (USA): No. 57 =========> No. 52 (Michelsen, just 19, qualified in Cincinnati and won a round, moving him to a new career high. He’ll play Fucsovics in Winston-Salem)
Roman Safiullin (RUS): No. 66 =========> No. 59 (Safiullin is back into the top 60 after losing early in Montreal, and heading down to the Challenger in Cary, NC – and winning it. He plays Moutet or McDonald in Winston-Salem).
Mattia Bellucci (ITA): No. 113 =========> No. 102 (Bellucci was in Montreal for qualifying, but he didn’t end up squeezing in. So he played the qualifying in Cary, having entered late. He made it through that, and made it all the way to the final. Bellucci will face wild card Aidan in the first round of the US Open qualifying).
Gabriel Diallo (CAN): No. 155 =========> No. 144 (A nice run to the Cary Challenger semifinals from the qualifying moves Diallo up, as he plays the US Open qualifying. It’s been a bit of a treading water season so far. But there’s still plenty of tennis left.
Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP): No. 513 =========> No. 300 (Carreño Busta is operating on a protected ranking. But his run to the third round in Cincinnati helped get that real ranking don by a fair bit. He beat qualifier Omni Kumar in the first round of Winston-Salem).
Alexei Popyrin (AUS): No. 23 =========> No. 28 (Popyrin’s huge leap from winning the Masters 1000 in Montreal gets a bit of an edge taken off, because he arrived in Cincinnati without any chance to rest, and so lost in the first round with a tough draw against Gaël Monfils. But he did show up. Popyrin had points from a qualies-to-quarters run in Cincinnati to defend but all in all, a serious net plus).
Adrian Mannarino (FRA): No. 33 =========> No. 42 (What a tough season for Mannarino, who lost in the first round of Cincinnati and likely kicked himself out of the seeds in New York. Mannarino’s ranking is barely treading water this year. He will play Vukic in Winston-Salem)
Dusan Lajovic (SRB): No. 54 =========> No. 66 (Lajovic lost in the first round in Cincinnati qualifying, after qualifying and making the third round last year).
Aleksandar Kovacevic (USA): No. 79 =========> No. 75 (Another career high for the American, reached by qualifying in Cincinnati. He had Félix Auger-Aliassime in the first round, so that wasn’t an easy one).
Damir Dzumhur (BIH): No. 100 =========> No. 81 (With that ranking, after winning the Challenger in Santo Domingo, Dzumhur would have been main draw in New York. As it is, he has to play the qualifying and as the No. 4 seed, vs. Alex Bolt).
Emil Ruusuvuori (FIN): No. 73 =========> No. 83 (When Ruusuvuori has been able to play this year, he’s looked okay. But he’s missed a lot of time; in Montreal, he pulled out shortly before his first-round qualifying match. And he missed Cincinnati. He drops points from a third-round effort a year ago).
Max Purcell (AUS): No. 68 =========> No. 91 (Purcell went from the qualifying ot the quarters a year ago – beating Ruud, then Wawrinka before taking Alcaraz to three sets last year, so losing in the second round didn’t help defend those points, which drop him outside the top 90).
Constant Lestienne (FRA): No. 88 =========> No. 110 (Lestienne will be fine for the US Open, but he drops out of the top 100 after failing to defend his points from winning a Challenger in Stanford the week of Cincinnati last year. He lost in the first round of Winston-Salem to countryman Alexandre Muller).
Jesper de Jong (NED): No. 103 =========> No. 130 (At a career high last week, de Jong drops his points from winning a Challenger in Poland last year. He is into the second round of the US Open qualies with a win over Heide Monday).
Mackenzie McDonald (USA): No. 119 =========> No. 121 (McDonald lost in the final round of qualifying in Cincinnati, dropping third-round points from last year. He just made the main draw in New York before his ranking dropped. McDonald will play Moutet in the first round of Winston-Salem
Stan Wawrinka (SUI): No. 141 =========> No. 179 (Wawrinka has a wild card into the US Open, as a former champion. But with his ranking falling, slowly but surely, you wonder if he’ll be back next year at age 40. He drops third-round points from Cincinnati, and has third-round points to defend at the US Open).
