Eight seeds remained of the 16. And the most competitive match on paper looked to be between two unseeded players: Karolina Muchova and Anastasia Potapova. In the end, not so much.

We also liked Paolini v Putintseva, a battle of underpowered and undersized powerhouses. It wasn’t too bad.

And, out of nowhere, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is back.

She’s the No. 25 seed – and 33! – despite kind of being a ghost for big chunks of this season after a great start. And yet, she’s played 19 tournaments.

And here she was trying to take out the No. 1, Iga Swiatek. While forgetting their only previous meeting at Rome in 2023, when Swiatek dropped a couple of her trademark bagels on her.

No bagels, and Pavlyuchenkova had her chances. But in the end Swiatek won pretty routinely.
