The main draw begins in this extended WTA 1000, with Naomi Osaka taking centre stage after having squeaked into the main draw on her own ranking.

Zhang’s career high in singles of No. 22 came right at that moment. And she hasn’t won a match since. It’s actually bonkers. Zhang took a break from Montreal a year ago through to Dubai in February. And it didn’t help.
The fact that she still has a ranking of No. 595 based on the one-pointers she gets from losing matches is also a crazy fact.
