The round of 16 in Beijing meant seeds were due to meet seeds. But with many upsets, especially in the lower-seeded range, they didn’t all pan out.

Only three of the eight seed matchups in the bottom half of the draw, which played Sunday, worked out. And a couple of the matches were between unseeded players.

Although one of those involved Naomi Osaka, who’s not your average unseeded player. But that one ended up getting rained out.

Canadians Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe finally got on court to play their first-round doubles match against the very good team of Hsieh Su-Wei and Wang Xinyu. They squeaked a tight first set out, and then went on to victory.
