The first semi was compelling, if a bit of a train wreck with Gauff – who was having it all her way, going down in a 2024 WTA record-high 21 double faults.

But as Wuhan returns after five years, they couldn’t ask for more than the No. 1 seed v the Chinese heroine.

On the Canadian side, Leylah Fenandez was looking for a WTA 1000 final in doubles. But was denied.
