Two Canadians and a Canadian-Chilean in action as Alejandro Tabilo and Gabriel Diallo hit the courts in Kazakhstan. Both were victorious.
In Antwerp, Félix Auger-Aliassime, unseeded, took on the always solid Marton Fucsovics in his opener.
They hadn’t played in a year. But they were 2-2 – all on hard courts. Fucsovics won the last one in the first round of Shanghai a year ago.
In his favour is the fact that Fucsovics hadn’t played since retiring in the fourth set of his first-round match against Jiri Lehecka at the US Open, more than six weeks ago.
Also in his favour – Auger-Aliassime won Antwerp two years ago (he didn’t play last year, with Tokyo, which he did play, being held the same week.). So he knows how to do it.
Still, it took awhile and he had to be patient while Fucscovics, who matched him every step of the way, cooled off a bit.
