MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

WTA Rankings Report – As of Feb. 3, 2025

(WTA Tour)

No changes in the top 15, which is understandable considering how thinly populated the two tournaments last week were – including the 500-level event in Linz.

But there still have been some great moves – notably by Dayana Yastremska and a couple of young Canadians, who earned new career highs last week on the ITF circuit.

And Linz champion Ekaterina Alexandrova, who is back in the top 25.

Karolina Muchova (CZE): No. 19 =========> No. 17 (Despite looking like she was less than 100 per cent in her semifinal loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Linz semifinals Satirday, Muchova moves up two spots. It’s her highest ranking since last May).

Ekaterina Alexandrova (RUS): No. 19 =========> No. 17 (The third time’s the charm as Alexandrova finally wins in Linz, after making the final twice before and being denied. She moves back up into the top 25 with the victory).

Maria Sakkari (GRE): No. 31 =========> No. 29 (Sakkari is back into the top 30, despite a rather lacklustre loss in the quarterfinals in Linz. But she’s got to start somewhere in turning it around).

Clara Tauson (DEN): No. 39 =========> No. 34 (Tauson was well beaten by Dayana Yastremska in the Linz semifinals, but she makes a nice leap in the rankings. She withdrew from this week’s event in Abu Dhabi before the draw).

Dayana Yastremska (UKR): No. 72 =========> No. 50 (Yastremska’s talent level is far close to her career high of No. 21 reached as a teenager, than it was at her current No. 72. She gets back into the top 50 by reaching the Linz final).

Ann Li (USA): No. 85 =========> No. 61 (Li, whose career high of No. 44 came in June of 2022, quietly moved to the Singapore final as an unseeded player. If she wins, she would move up to No. 56).

Anna Blinkova (RUS): No. 83 =========> No. 71 (Blinkova made the quarterfinals in Linz. She plays a qualifier in the first round of Cluj-Napoca this week).

Kimberly Birrell (AUS): No. 99 =========> No. 86 (Birrell, at 26, finally cracked the top 100 in Australia. And she made the mixed doubles final. She’s continuing her good play by making the Singapore quarterfinals).

Petra Martic (CRO): No. 125 =========> No. 111 (Martic had a good run in Linz last week, going from the qualifying to the quarterfinals and giving Alexandrova a scare before going down in three sets).

Aliaksandra Sasnovich (BLR): No. 149 =========> No. 128 (Sasnovich, 30, qualified and won a round in Linz).

Victoria Mboko (CAN): No. 268 =========> No. 215 (Mboko, still just 18, is on a good roll and wins the $60,000 ITF in Rome. Ga. She came from the qualifying. It’s been a slog despite her young age. And she can certainly think of finally being high enough to make her Grand Slam debut in the qualifying at Roland Garros and Wimbledon – and not in the juniors this time).

Cadence Brace (CAN): No. 324 =========> No. 299 (Brace, 19, made the semifinals at that Rome ITF out of the qualifying, losing to Mboko in the semifinals. But she breaks into the top 300 for the first time. She and countrywoman Kayla Cross will both be at LSU, in their first year, in the spring after both played a lot of ITFs over the last year).

Kimberley Birrell (AUS) (No. 85)
Maya Joint (AUS) (No. 102)
Mananchaya Sawangkaew (THA) (No. 121)
Gao Xinyu (CHN) (No. 138)
Iva Jovic (USA) (No. 168)
Tatiana Prozorova (RUS) (No. 177)
Hanne Vandewinkel (BEL). (No. 186)
Tereza Valentova (CZE) (No. 187)
Manon Léonard (FRA) (No. 188)

Donna Vekic (CRO): No. 17 =========> No. 19 (Vekic didn’t play last week, and so drops her points from her Linz semifinal a year ago).

Jelena Ostapenko (LAT): No. 26 =========> No. 35 (Ostapenko, who was playing as late as Sunday in the Australian Open women’s doubles final, didn’t go to Linz to defend her title there. And so she drops those 500 points and falls out of the top 30).

Yafan Wang (CHN): No. 71 =========> No. 89 (Wang was defending points from a semifinal in Thailand a year ago, but didn’t play last week).

Jule Niemeier (GER): No. 79 =========> No. 96 (Same for Niemeier, who qualified and won a round in Linz last year but didn’t play last week. She has points from making the final of a $100K ITF to defend next week, so she has work to do).

Arina Rodionova (AUS): No. 183 =========> No. 198 (Rodionova, 35, falls close to exiting the top 200 after losing in the second round of qualifying in Singapore. She had reached the quarterfinals in the Hua Hin event a year ago, the same week. On the plus side, she started an OnlyFans).

Lin Zhu (CHN): No. 152 =========> No. 220 (Zhu was MIA from last year’s Wimbledon until the Australian Open last week, where she was down in qualifying.  She drops her points from the Thailand Open – which was replaced by Singapore this year. She also played the qualifying in Singapore but lost in the second and final round
