It’s a big week at the top level for the Canadians, who will all gather together in the desert for the BNP Paribas Open.
It’d be fun if they had a Canuckian dinner. But that’s not how we roll.
Beyond that, huge contingent at a pair of $15K ITFs in Quebec – in Trois-Rivières for the women, and in Sherbrooke for the men.
Dan Martin of Laval is already through – winning the doubles at the $15K in Sherbrooke. And Victoria Mboko is in titletown again with a win at the $60K women’s ITF in Portugal.
Great opportunities to get pro experience and maybe some ranking points, without having to go to the other side of the world.

Viktoria Mboko is amazing these days, Beating Kayla Cross, her (former?} doubles partner 6-0 6-0, not to mention Dart. Which coach? Her new training location, please? I don’t think she trains in Montreal anymore. Would appreciate a feature with her. She, Cross, Branstine are all doing very well. Mboko and Branstine seem to have overcome some serious health issues. Kudos to them.
She hasn’t been in Montreal for long.
She … disappeared for a fair bit. I wasn’t sure she would come back. And then she moved to Europe.
Kayla Cross is sort of a crafty lefty. But she’s always hurt. So I wouldn’t jump all over a score of a match you didn’t see and draw any conclusions.
Dart had an absolute marathon the night before in the semis. She was spent from the get-go. So, great for Mboko.
Getting into the top 150 in the women’s game is not a relatively *hard* task (compared to the men) if you hit a good ball. No one sees you coming.
It’s after that that it gets interesting.
That’s what Stakusic is finding out right now. Once you get beyond a certain level, EVERYONE is at least as good or usually better.
Well, Mboko has also had the satisfaction of recently beating in Women’s tournaments Clervie Ngounoue and Sofia Costoulas, who as juniors were ranked higher at #1 and #2 than her at #6.
BTW, Branstine has just played Qs in Miami.
Um yeah, I have her on the Canucks This week list and I also Tweeted about her match while it was happening.
I don’t think junior rankings mean much once you get to the pros.
Hi Steph
I love your site, and all you do for us, but I’m having a couple of problems. Is it just me, or something that needs tweaking?
1. After a few days, your main headline starts appearing in every break between tournaments, sometimes more than once. One day I counted, and the ‘Canucks this week’ headline was on my page 18 times! It makes for a lot of scrolling. This has been happening for about 2 months.
2. Whenever I post a comment, the spinner just never quits. Sometimes I end up refreshing the page when I come back later, but it often never stops. Most times, my comments don’t ever post, but occasionally they do, even while the spinner hasn’t stopped. Weird – this has also been happening for a couple of months. So, hopefully, this actually posts.
Brenda
Yes, I know about the “headline” thing. It’s definitely a bug but we’ve had trouble getting to the bottom of it.
It seems to be the biggest “headline font” – but ONLY in that one particular post.
So getting rid of that will likely solve the issue.
It’s nice to see Victoria Mboko marching through her draw. Another final tomorrow!
