Former junior pals Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune go all the way back to Les Petits As and beyond. But they’ve only met three times in the pros – and not since Wimbledon in 2023. And that includes (officially, I guess) the Next Gen Finals round robin in 2021.
It was their first meeting on clay; the most recent was the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2023, won in straight sets by Alcaraz. Rune’s only previous win was when Alcaraz retired in the second-set tiebreak at the Paris Indoors in 2022. But the Dane got it done – a much needed title.
In Munich, No. 1 Zverev met No. 2 Shelton in the final. And he also extracted a much-needed title.
(Barcelona and Munich are six hours ahead of EDT).
