MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

The kids are all grown up: FAA and Shapo get hitched

When you’ve known kids since they were 14 or 15, and suddenly they’re both getting married – it makes you acutely aware of the passage of time.

And so it is that in the space of 10 days, both 26-year-old Denis Shapovalov and 25-year-old Félix Auger-Aliassime, friends and teammates and doubles partners and opponents from way back, hhave said “I dos” to their longtime loves.

For Shapovalov, who has known new bride Mirjam Bjorklund since they were juniors, had been dating her for eons and was engaged to her nearly that long – it was a hush-hush ceremony the weekend of the Davis Cup tie in Halifax.

It was the reason he didn’t play, even if he didn’t want to reveal that when asked about the tie (we were sworn to secrecy and granted him that one – in lieu of a gift. We joked that after the longest engagement in tennis history, he at least was going to beat his friend down the aisle. Barely).

Shapovalov is from Toronto; Bjorklund is from Sweden. And much of the debate the last couple of years, he once told me, was finding a place where both families could gather.

And so, they settled upon Lesante Cape in Zakynthos, Greece. The island of Zante is off the west coast of mainland Greece. It was a four-day celebration with just 30 guests, and got the full-spread treatment in Vogue Scandanavia.

The bride wore Ukrainian designer Milla Nova; the groom’s tux was Hugo Boss.

Bjorklund didn’t have bridesmaids; she had her parents and sister. Shapovalov had five groomsmen including longtime coach Adriano Furorivia, and childhood best friend Jonathan Soriano.

The dog, Yatzy, was the ring bearer.

Auger-Aliassime, who is set to marry longtime girlfriend Nina Ghaibi this weekend in Marrakech, Morocco got similar treatment in People Magazine – except pre-wedding.

It’s familiar territory for Ghaibi, born in the US to a Croatian mother (her cousin is Croatian-turned-Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic) and a Moroccan father.

Auger-Aliassime, who made a great run to the US Open semifinals, made a few jokes about having a tux fitting on the Monday right after the tournament.

In the end, he skipped the Davis Cup tie last weekend.

Auger-Aliassime will wear a Dior tux, a company he’s had a relationship with for several years.

Unlike Shapovalov, who went low-key, Auger-Aliassime told People that he was expecting Gabriel Diallo, Vasek Pospisil and lifelong friend and teammate Alexis Galarneau for the occasion.

Not much time to rest for Shapovalov, who is entered in the Tokyo tournament that begins in five days.

Auger-Aliassime is scheduled to return in Shanghai, which begins Oct. 1.
