MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

The rest of the tennis world is in Madrid – with 48 first-round qualifying matches going on Monday.

But Aryna Sabalenka and Jelena Ostapenko were still in Stuttgart to play the singles final, with a break on Good Friday as decreed by local laws.

Both have a first-round bye at the 96-draw in Spain, so they won’t have to play until at least Thursday.

Ostapenko continued her roll, all over Sabalenka and beating the top two players in the world in a clay-court tournament for the first time since Serena Williams did it in 2012.

But to outline how out there THIS result was, Williams not being No. 1 at the time wasn’t a function of her true space in the game. This one is far more of a feat, as it were.

No Canadians in the Madrid qualifying, even if Rebecca Marino and Marina Stakusic likely would have qualified by ranking. Marino is playing a $100K ITF on hard court in Japan, where she played BJK Cup 10 days ago. Stakusic withdrew from the qualifying.

Nearly half the 24 seeds in the 48-player draw went out in the first round.

(Stuttgart and Madrid are six hours ahead of EDT).
