No offence to the hardy Damir Dzumhur. But that’s who Novak Djokovic would have had in the third round in Madrid, had he been able to get past Matteo Arnaldi in his opener.
But he couldn’t, and so now those two played for a spot in the round of 16.
Arnaldo won it – and they finished without electricity and with the chair umpire yelling the scores .
Nothing else was done, and in the end they had to cancel the entire day because of a power outage that crushed several countries in Europe including Spain and Portugal.
At the big Challenger in Estoril they did complete the day, but behind closed doors. At a Masters 1000 with literally thousands of people in the dark, that’s not possible.
(Madrid is six hours ahead of EDT).
