FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York – Their first US Open title, few saw coming. Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe had just started playing together, no one had a handle on their game style, and they just ran the table in 2023.
Fast forward two years, and multiple on- and off-court challenges, and the Canadian-Kiwi (mostly Canadian) pair not only beat the two best teams in the world in straight sets, they won their second US Open title without catching anyone off-guard.
Everyone saw them coming. And they still did it, playing a level of their aggressive, full-forward serve-volley tennis that we might not have ever seen. At least, not for such a sustained period of excellence.
Here’s our piece for the Canadian Press.
(We write a lot about their “Canadianness” in the piece. But you can see by the headline chosen by the CBC website that they will don’t … quite get it).
