A tough, tough opening match for both Naomi Osaka and Leylah Fernandez opened up their Wuhan campaigns.

With the 56-player draw, Fernandez is unseeded, and No. 11 seed Osaka didn’t get a first-round bye.

They had only played once before, and it was memorable. Fernandez came back from a set down to beat her 6-4 in the third, in the third round of the 2021 where she went on to make the final. This time, Osaka began slowly and it got tight in the second, but she ran away with it in the third.

But beyond that, a lot of good matches in store: Muchova vs. Kostyuk (oof) and Ostapenko vs. Cirstea (which didn’t last long). And Bencic vs. Vekic (which also didn’t last long).

And Andreescu and Mboko both played doubles – with Andreescu getting through.
