Qualifier Valentin Vacherot of Monaco has won seven matches to get to the Shanghai semifinals.
On Friday, his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech of France, attempted to join him. He had to get past an in-form Félix Auger-Aliassime to do it. And he did.
And Daniil Medvedev, who eked out a win against clever young American Learner Tien to get here, whad to grind out another one against No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur to move on. And he did.
They’ve played a LOT; this was their 12th meeting. De Minaur has won on clay, indoor hard and outdoor hard but had won just 4-of-11. He has won the last two (but both were on clay). Medvedev is now 6-0 on outdoor hard courts.
(Shanghai is 12 hours ahead of EDT)
