Six of the top eight seeds made the final eight in Wuhan. And you love to see it.
Compelling: Aryna Sabalenka v Elena Rybakina, who were meeting for the 13th time with Sabalenka holding a 7-5 lead. They’ve met on a lot of big occasions – the first time came in Wuhan, in 2019, when neither was what they later became and Sabalenka (seeded No. 9) beat Rybakina (unseeded) in three sets.
Eight of their meetings have gone the distance. But not this one, which ended up fairly routine for Sabalenka.
In the other matches, the crafty Laura Siegemund couldn’t come up with nearly enough against Coco Gauff. And Iga Swiatek had nothing against Jasmine Paolini.
(Wuhan is 12 hours ahead of EDT)
