MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

The irony of Félix Auger-Aliassime officially qualifying on the last day is that his spot – No. 8 – was already set in a pool with Jannik Sinner and to PLAY Sinner in his opening match.

Lorenzo Musetti, the man he beat out and who ended up making it anyway after Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal, got a *relatively* easier opener against Taylor Fritz. Of course, he only had one day to travel and recover and adjust and get ready for it. And Fritz won routinely.

But Sinner, the home-country hero was of course going to get the night-session match. That would have been true even over Djokovic, had he played.

Auger-Aliassime gave Sinner a good tussle at the US Open, and 10 days ago in the final of the Paris Masters. But it’s been a good long time since he’s beaten him. And on Monday night, with his calf pull late in the first set, he had no chance.
