Chief among them was Leylah Fernandez, seeded No. 13, who took on a potentially tough customer in Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. Too tough, it turned out.
Also kicking things off today are top Americans Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula.
Anisimova, with the dropping of points from this week a year ago (the calendar swing from “earliest possible” to “latest possible” schedule mean this is going to be a wacky year on that front) is the new world No. 3.
Only briefly, though. Maybe? Coco Gauff has squeezed past her in the live rankings with a win at the United Cup, but Anisimova can well get it back by winning in Brisbane.
