MELBOURNE, Australia – Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka, two players who might not be top of mind as favorites to win the Australian Open but potentiallly very much could, were in action Tuesday on the final day of the first round of singles.

Rybakina looked good. Osaka … got through.

And Leylah Fernandez had a tough ask against a player who has risen in a hurry, and who patterns her playing style on the fabulously retired Ashleigh Barty. Too tough, as it turned out.
