MELBOURNE, Australia – Canadian Leylah Fernandez, out in the opening rounds in both singles and women’s doubles, has one last shot at sticking around Melbourne Park a little longer during this Australian Open.
The catch is she has to play mixed doubles with Nick Kyrgios, who was eliminated in men’s doubles along with also-broken countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round Thursday night.
As Kyrgios is wont to say, it’ll be a bit of a laugh as they got ANZ Arena on Friday evening.
Kyrgios, both knees taped, was dogtrotting it in the warmup. So we’re presuming he’ll give it a better go in the actual match – against 2021 and 2022 Wimbledon mixed doubles champions Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski.
Here’s what it looked like.
Fernandez does have some experience with this sort of thing.
She once teamed up with Kyrgios’s good mate Jack Sock in an “all Lulu Lemon” mixed at the US Open.
And she played with Venus Williams in women’s doubles at the US Open just last fall.
