A lot of returns in Austin as both Venus Williams and Bianca Andreescu were on the court.

For Andreescu, it was her first WTA Tour level match of the season, after a few appearances at lower-level ITF tournaments and a three-week break. So there was no way to know what her level will be; the highest-ranked player she faced was at No. 221.

Both ended up going out, with Andreescu looking a little better in the process.

In Mérida, Canadian qualifier Cadence Brace took on Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey in a stadium evening match. Brace had two good wins in qualifying, including against Aussie vet Priscilla Hon. It was her WTA Tour main-draw debut, but she only got two games.
