There wasn’t a single singles seed in action Wednesday in Austin. And yet, it was still an interesting order of play.
You had Taylor Townsend against young and rising Czech Nikola Bartunkova – a singles match that featured plenty of all-court and net play.
And the fact that the first night session match was doubles only makes sense when you realized that it’s Venus Williams who’s on the docket.
Last year’s singles and doubles champion Yuan Yue, who had to qualify this year and didn’t make it, slid in as a lucky loser and was the other night match.
In Mérida, Canadian Marina Stakusic played the solid and VERY steady Cristina Bucsa for a spot in the quarterfinals. She battled hard before going down. It feels like it’s coming back to where it was.
