So the coast looks clear for No. 1 seed Jasmine Paolini, in on a late wild card, to do damage at the WTA 500 in Mérida.

As for Austin, last year’s champion withdrew after winning Dubai. And so the only seed left is No. 4 Peyton Stearns.

She also could use a good run.

And Taylor Townsend is into her first career WTA singles semi, at age 29.
