The rest of the first round of women’s qualifying was on later in the day on four courts, as the men’s qualifying began.
And Taylor Townsend, disappointed in her quest for her first career WTA title in Austin on Sunday, had to hustle to Indian Wells and qualify for the WTA 1000 event.
She probably deserved better – i.e., a wild card. But there was no way to anticipate that she’d have this kind of run in her. She beat the rising Joanna Garland to get through.
