Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko, doubles partners this week, had already met twice this year.
In Adelaide, to start the season, Andreeva was all over a depleted Mboko in the final. In Doha, a WTA 1000, Mboko prevailed in a third-set tiebreak in the round of 16.
In this tiebreaker, Mboko rolled in the third set on a day Andreeva grappled with back issues – but, more pertinently, Mboko’s game.
And local Amanda Animisova, a Miami resident, went out meekly to Belinda Bencic.
