No. 7 seed Félix Auger-Aliassime was due to clash with No. 26 Arthur Rinderknech in the third round in Miami. Instead, he met unseeded Térence Atmane, whose ceiling is likely lower but who is in form.
Atman, younger than FAA at 24, is just a couple of spots off his career high ranking of No. 54. So he doesn’t have the same kind of resumé. But on the day, he’s capable of top-level tennis. And this was that day.
Defending champ Jakub Mensik met American Frances Tiafoe, whose top level IS good enough to post the upset and who is playing, more or less, at home. And it was a barnburner, a much-needed win for Tiafoe.
(Miami is on EDT).
