The longstanding WTA event in Linz has been through it – various spots on the calendar, various incarnations.
It’s a 500-level tournament. But there’s only No. 10 Mirra Andreeva in the top 10, and only one other top-20 player. The No. 8 seed, Sara Bejlek, is only ranked No. 40.
And, this year, it’s on … indoor clay after so many years on hard courts.
Contrast this with next week’s 500-level tournament in Stuttgart, also indoors on clay, which will have a ridiculously tough draw.
So a great opportunity for someone to earn a big chunk of ranking points.
It’s a bit weird to have a 500 tournament the same week as a lot of players have Billie Jean King commitments they may or may not be trying to get out of, or want a break after the long US swing.
(Charleston is on EDT; Bogotá is an hour behind)
