Open Court

MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

ATP Rankings Report – As of April 20, 2026

With his impressive run to the Munich title, Ben Shelton becomes the first American in nearly 25 years to win a clay-court title above the 250 level.

That was Andre Agassi in Rome, in 2002. And while Americans have won on the red clay-ish surface in Houston, Shelton is only the fifth to win one on the real stuff in Europe since 2000.

He also gets a BMW. So, good week.

In Barcelona, Arthur Fils continues to impress in his comeback. He’s always been touted as the real deal, but back issues set him back last year. He’ll be one to watch at his home Slam, no doubt.

rankings for Monday, click here.

Taylor Fritz (USA): No. 8 ===============> No. 7
(Fritz, who hasn’t started his clay season yet, moves up one as Alex de Minaur drops a spot after losing in the second round of Barcelona).

Andrey Rublev (RUS): No. 15 ===============> No. 12
(Disappointed in the Barcelona final, Rublev still moves up – although the top 10 is nearly 1,000 points away).

Flavio Cobolli (ITA): No. 16 ===============> No. 13
(A great effort from the Italian, who made the final in Munich and is up to a new career high).

Arthur Fils (FRA): No. 30 ===============> No. 25
(After dealing with back woes that kept him off court, and delaying and parsing his return, Fils impresses in winning Barcelona).

Joao Fonseca (BRA): No. 35 ===============> No. 31
(Fonseca lost to the eventual champion in Munich which, added to his losses to the top three players in the rankings, is yet another “not bad” loss. He moves up and likely should be seeded in Paris. Much to the relief of many of the players, no doubt).

Denis Shapovalov (CAN): No. 39 ===============> No. 35
(Shapovalov made the quarters in impressive fashion in Munich. But he lost to qualifier Alex Molcan, which wasn’t so impressive).

Rafael Jodar (ESP): No. 55 ===============> No. 42
(Other “Next Gen” players are getting far more attention. But Jodar, who decided not to return to college tennis this year, is rising like a moonshot. He made the semifinals in Barcelona, and given he was ranked No. 687 a year ago, you have to put him in the phenom category).

Lorenzo Sonego  (ITA): No. 66 ===============> No. 62
(Sonego return to action for the first time since the Australian Open in Barcelona, losing to Rublev in the second round).

Hamad Medjedovic (SRB): No. 88 ===============> No. 68
(Medjedovic went from the qualifying – he won his final round 8-6 in the third-set tiebreak over Quentin Halys – to the semifinals in Barcelona, losing to Rublev and helping his ranking quite a bit).

Molcan

Alex Molcan (SVK): No. 166 ===============> No. 107
(Molcan, who missed a couple of months in the summer of 2024, has been playing well and makes the Barcelona semis out of the qualifying. That’s a couple of weeks after making the quarters out of the qualifying in Bucharest. Before that, it had been a serious struggle. His ranking has jumped 100 spots in the last month; he was outside the top 600 a year ago. Molcan will be a high seed in the qualifying in Paris and with the form he’s showing, you’d expect him to make it).

Roman Safiullin (RUS): No. 226 ===============> No. 176
(Safiullin disappeared for from last year’s US Open – were he beat Gaël Monfils in five sets in the first round – until he returned on the Callenger circuit this past February. But he wins the Challenger title in Oeiras and moves back into the top 200. Two years ago, he was at a career high No. 36).

Joao Lucas Reis Da Silva (BRA): No. 211 ===============> No. 196
(The only known out gay player on Tour, Reis Da Silva makes the Tallahassee Challenger final and moves back into the top 200).

Reis da Silva made his Grand Slam debut in August at the 2025 US Open.

Corentin Moutet (FRA) (No. 30)
Rafael Jodar (ESP) (No. 42)
Ethan Quinn (USA) (No. 48)
Alexander Blockx (BEL) (No. 69)
Patrick Kypson (USA) (No. 90)
Henrique Rocha (POR) (No. 118)
Clément Tabur (FRA) (No. 167)

Casper Ruud (NOR): No. 12 ===============> No. 15
(Ruud didn’t play last week, dropping his points from a Barcelona quarterfinal a year ago. He no doubt is loading up for a pretty key title defence in Madrid – and the 1,000 points that go with that. If he loses early, he’s in danger of falling out of the seeds for Roland Garros).

Ruud won Madrid a year ago. He’ll be hard-pressed to repeat.

Holger Rune (DEN): No. 27 ===============> No. 39
(Rune took the title last year in Barcelona, so that hurts his ranking. He expects to return soon from Achilles tendon surgery, rather quickly on your typical timeline. But even if he used a protected ranking he couldn’t get seeded at Roland Garros).

Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE): No. 67 ===============> No. 80
(Tough times for the 27-year-old, whose ranking takes another hit after he’s beaten by Fabian Maroszan in the first round of Munich).

Francisco Comesana (ARG): No. 92 ===============> No. 105
(It’s a good thing the Roland Garros entry deadline was last week, because the 25-year-old Argentine falls out of the top 100 after losing in the first round of a Challenger in Oeiras. A year ago, he made the final there. Comesana has third-round points to defend in Madrid).
