Two women’s semifinals, and two men’s quarterfinals, split the day and night session bills Thursay in Madrid.

The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds on the women’s side, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka were still alive and you’d have to give them both a great chance to meet in the final for the second straight tournament. They delivered.

As for the men in the bottom half of the draw, there was No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas – and then there a qualifier, a lucky loser and a Chinese player who was barely inside the top 100 before the tournament began.

That’s the kind of week it’s been.

The qualifier and the lucky loser make it to the final four.
