Aslan Karatsev defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in the final round of the Madrid qualfying.
They met again – in the semifinals of the main draw.
It’s rare enough that a qualifier and a lucky loser both make it to the final four of a Masters 1000; even more rare that they meet again. But it’s been that kind of week.
On the women’s side, only the doubles semifinals – with Canadian Leylah Fernandez and partner Taylor Townsend, two of the … least tall players at the top of the game … taking on a pair of six-footers in Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia. It was close, but the Canadian is the last one eliminated from Madrid – on the second Friday; not so bad.
(Madrid is six hours ahead of EDT).
