Open Court

MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

After a slow start – and a quick start by opponent Barbora Krejcikova – Iga Swiatek pulled it together nicely in her first match in quite awhile.

There were some of the same issues – the forehand errors, serving inconsistencies. But she had enough.

Just the opposite for Jessica Pegula, who won’t be happy with her performance against Coco Gauff in her opener, was looking to fix some things – and was unsuccessful.

But Gauff played pretty well against Pegula. Was it well enough that she went into her match against Swiatek, with that 1-11 head-to-head, and back herself? Maybe. But Swiatek also made it easy for her and it was a messy win for the American.

Meanwhile, the Cana-Kiwis tried to go 2-0, against the pesky Italians. And they pulled out triumph from the depths of big trouble.
