Flashback: Marino and Bouchard, 2011

Can it be more than nine years since 17-year-old Genie Bouchard was getting ready to make her Fed Cup debut?

Time flies.

Bouchard and Rebecca Marino (then just 20), spoke at a press conference in Montreal in March 2011, ahead of a World Group II playoff tie on red clay in Slovenia.

For Marino, it was only the second Fed Cup tie of her career.

Bouchard was still a junior – still more than a year away from her Wimbledon girls’ singles title – but already transitioning to the pro events.

The tie ended up being pretty dramatic, as Marino lost 8-6 in the third set to Polona Hercog in the first reverse singles. She then had to come back to try to clinch the tie in the deciding doubles with Sharon Fichman.

They fell just short.
