Austrian Tamira Paszek, who reached No. 26 in 2013, has tried to play three times this season. The last two times, she retired in the second set without winning a game.
Paszek announced on Instagram that she’s suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, and may not be back until 2018.
It’s the craziest thing – a “chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain”, per the Mayo Clinic website.
Any stimulation – even brushing your teeth or putting on makeup – can cause a jolt of excruciating pain.
