Denis Shapovalov picked up the lion’s share of awards as Tennis Canada bestowed its year-end hardware.
The 18-year-old won Player of the Year, Singles Player, and Most Improved Player for 2017 on the men’s side.
Daniel Nestor, still the highest-ranked doubles player in Canada, won that award.
“Junior Player of the Year” went to Félix Auger-Aliassime, who is of junior age but … didn’t play a single junior event in 2017. If age were the determining criteria, Shapovalov should have won that one, as well.
There are no Canadian boys currently ranked in the top 250 in the ITF junior rankings.
