Former Wimbledon tournament director Sarah Clarke has experienced some moments to last a lifetime this week.
The 52-year-old was introduced in the British House of Lords Tuesday as the “Lady Usher of the Black Rod”.
Clarke is the first woman in the 669-year history of the position. She’s also the first not to have a military background.
Queen Elizabeth herself presented Clarke with the ceremonial ebony staff last week. It’s used to summon British MPs to the Queen’s Speech every year.
The job itself “involves controlling access to and maintaining order within the upper Lords chamber.”
