Colombia’s Emiliana Arango has a trademark – the backwards ballcap that makes the 17-year-old junior stand out in a sea of pony-tailed, visor-wearing clones.
A 2017 junior US Open semifinalist who’s been playing the pro circuit about a year, she was ranked No. 510 going into Bogotá.
In only her fourth WTA tournament (she got a wildcard into her home-country event for the third straight year), Arango upset No. 84 Veronica Cepede Royg and reached the quarterfinals before retiring against Anna Schmiedlova Friday with a hip issue.
That effort will move her up 165 spots in the rankings, into the top 350.
