Germany’s Michael Stich and his partners took over in Hamburg right after the event, formerly a Masters 1000, was downgraded and moved to July from May.
But this year’s trophy ceremony was Stich’s last.
He is being replaced by Peter-Michael Reichel, 65, whose company has interest in several WTA events.
Stich was emotional during the trophy ceremony.
Reichel has plans. He wants a WTA event to expand Hamburg to two weeks (and he’s on the WTA Board). He’ll consider relocating if the city doesn’t pony up. He won’t even rule out changing the surface to hard courts.
