
A bit lost in the drama during US Open finals weekend was a major personal and professional triumph that might have topped them all.
American Bethanie Mattek-Sands was just 14 months removed from a ghastly knee injury, suffered on court while playing singles at Wimbledon. She was the No. 1 doubles player in the world at the time.
A year ago in New York, she was practicing walking without crutches. Saturday, she and Jamie Murray won the mixed doubles title.
It was a little emotional getting that win,” Mattek-Sands said. “Appreciating the journey is really the real win.”
