Despite Naomi Osaka’s win at the US Open this year, and Sloane Stephens’s similar exploit a year ago in New York, both were rookies at the WTA Tour Finals in Singapore when they took the court Monday night.
And it was the American’s superior experience and maturity that shone through in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
The match took two hours and 24 minutes. By the end, Osaka was clearly discouraged.
“Seriously, thanks to everyone that supported during the match today. I dunno what I did to deserve you guys but I hope one day I’m worthy,” Osaka Tweeted.
