Open Court

MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Vid: Andreescu gets ready to back it up

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Just three days ago – it feels like a moment and an eternity, all at once – Canadian teen Bianca Andreescu capped off the week of her life, and won the biggest singles title (ever?) in Canadian tennis at the BNP Paribas Open.

It’s been a whirlwind since then.

But now the 18-year-old has to get back to work.

She finds herself on the just-inaugurated new stadium court at the “new” Miami Open, in a night match on Wednesday night.

And her opponent is the same opponent she faced in the first round at Indian Wells two weeks ago: Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania.

Here’s what Andreescu looked like on the practice court a couple of hours ago, getting ready.

Still under the radar in Miami

Andreescu created quite a sensation in tennis. And the media back home is playing it up big: not only did Radio-Canada arrive (that had been planned for several weeks), Sportsnet also arrived.

But among the mostly casual fans at this event, she’s not on the radar, yet. There were, at most, a dozen fans there to watch her warm up at 5 p.m.

Many of the folks in the cushy seats that line the new stadium will probably be wondering who both of these women with Romanian names even are.

That’s the thing about tennis. Feels like every week, you have to prove yourself all over again.

Here’s Begu on Monday, talking to Tennis.Life about that match at Indian Wells, and looking ahead to this one.
