MELBOURNE, Australia – Pretty much everything Nick Kyrgios does around Melbourne Park is of interest to a big group of fans.
But combine that with a little star turn with Amanda Anisimova in mixed doubles Friday, and the stands on Court 5 were packed earlier in the day.
The two Nike stars warmed up for their first-round match against wild cards Monique Adamczak and David Vega Fernandez, in pretty business-like fashion, with the crowd following their every move.
(Now, we know how Adamczak, a 37-year-old Aussie doubles specialist who actually reached her careeer ranking high of No. 44 just two years ago, got a wild card. As for David Vega Fernandez, a 25-year-old Spaniard whose doubles ranking just outside the top 100 is around his career best, we have no idea).
Anisimova was already in her match kit.
Kyrgios, perhaps in hommage to his American partner, went with a Boston Celtics sleeveless from his extensive collection.
Here’s what it looked like.
