With the deadline falling on Monday, the entry list for the US Open men’s singles event has been finalized.
And whether it’s a surprise or not – especially with the cancellation of the Mutua Madrid Open made official today – Rafael Nadal will not defend his 2019 title per the list Open Court has obtained.
The rest of those missing in action have been reported, more or less, by Open court over the last few weeks.
They include world No. 4 Roger Federer (out for the season after his second knee surgery), No. 9 Gaël Monfils (whose better half, WTA No. 5 Elina Svitolina, also isn’t expected to play).
Also absent are No. 11 Fabio Fognini, No. 17 Stan Wawrinka, No. 40 Nick Kyrgios and No. 49 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga among the top 50.
90 of top 100 on the list
Only 10 of the world’s top 100 on the men’s side are missing – which is a little misleading as have of them are in the top 20.
And, we should note, being on the entry list in no way guarantees they all will come and play.
The other players missing are No. 58 Lucas Pouille (injured), No. 71 Pierre-Hugues Herbert (whose wife is expecting their first child around that time) and No. 89 Nicolas Jarry of Chile (who is serving a doping suspension).
In other words – just about everyone who COULD come, is keeping the door open to coming.
Andy Murray next in line
The initial cutoff for the 128-player draw – which will have no qualifiers and therefore be comprised of the first 120 players by ranking and eight wild cards – is 127.
Juan Martin del Potro would have been next in line for the withdrawals that are sure to come.
In his absence, Andy Murray, at No. 129, is next in and surely will get in. (UPDATE: as of Friday, Alexei Popyrin withdrew and Murray is indeed straight in).
Three protected rankings
In the initial entry list, three players have entered with protected rankings.
They are Yen-Hsun Lu (doesn’t it feel as though he’s had a protected ranking for years already?) as well as Americans Mackenzie McDonald and Jack Sock.
After we broke this, the US Open’s Tweet confirmed it because as defending champion, he’d be on there.

Pospisil, to my knowledge, is not entered in Cincinnati qualifying, though.
