After Naomi Osaka’s bombshell announcement Wednesday night – that she wouldn’t play her scheduled Thursday singles semifinal against Elise Mertens in solidary with the Black Lives Matter movement, the entire Thursday schedule was pushed back to Friday.

And that meant that Osaka, who had been out – suddenly was back in.

She clearly has had a fair bit on her mind this week. Beyond her anger at yet another Black man being gunned down by the police, she also missed rapper boyfriend Cordae’s 23rd birthday.

Still, on her ever improving form in this first tournament back, you’d be hard-pressed to bet against her against Mertens.
