Open Court

MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

.

On Sunday at the US Open, Serena Williams already had to turn the page on an enervating victory over countrywoman Sloane Stephens in the third round.

She had to look ahead to fourth-round clash against No. 15 Maria Sakkari – an opponent she has dramatic recent history with.

Williams played Sakkari in the “Cincy” tuneup event the week before the Open.

And after she failed to put away the match in the second set (and she probably should have), she made what could charitably be described as a half-effort in losing the third set 6-1.

But this is Slam time. And Williams is looking for No. 24 in a field that is missing six of the top 10 players in the world.

It’s her opportunity, and she knows it.

A chance for a do-over – in Slam conditions

What will she bring against Sakkari on Monday? Tune in and see.

Here she is on the practice court Sunday, working on some things with coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

(She’s wearing one of those Nike French Open skirts – something you wouldn’t see on her in an actual match, but extra kit she uses on the practice court. Thankfully).
