Most of the players who were, in paper, expected to make the Cincinnati quarterfinals actually made it.

The notable exception is No. 6 seed Denis Shapovalov, who went out in his opener to unseeded Benoit Paire.

But Paire converted that break by getting through John Isner Thursday, and is into the quarters against No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev.

Meanwhile, Félix Auger-Aliassime is into his first Masters 1000 quarter since 2019 Miami, after an upset win over Matteo Berrettini. He gets Stefanos Tsitsipas.
