A double-header for Leylah Fernandez, who had a tough singles match against Beatriz Haddad Maia, and then had to follow that up with doubles, partnered with sister Bianca. It was an L for both.
Also – Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Anett Kontaveit and the other top seeds sprung into action. And other than Swiatek, it was a tough day at the office.
Serena Williams said goodbye to Toronto with a straight-sets loss to Belinda Bencic.

I am sure fans attending today (Wednesday) would appreciate to see some of the top players on the 11 am slot on the stadium. Why is it being left empty?? Why??
So … I guess that means you’re going to boycott it and not attend today?
Steph: … you slay me !!!
In point of fact, Swiatek blew out Ajla in 1:04 and Fernandez lost in 1:36. I really don’t think people paying $100’s of dollars for this session were happy with 2 hr and 40 minutes of play. In point of fact I am there Thursday afternoon and guess what: again there are only 2 matches on the OOP!!!! Karl Hale: are you reading this???
Well, you should probably ask for a refund then.
(And don’t ever get tickets on Ashe for the US Open).
But action starts on all the other courts at 11 a.m. – so make sure you don’t arrive and sit in the empty stadium in protest during that precious time!
HURRY!!!! Rush to Grandstand to stake out a spot for Sabalenka and Gauff. It’s gonna be LIT!!!!!!
