The shocker of – well, perhaps the season – was No. 152 Borna Coric winning in Cincinnati.
He’s playing on a protected ranking. And he rolled through the field just 14 months after shoulder surgery and only a few months after getting back on the horse.
It was quite a week for him, and proof that tennis players just are the most stubborn, resilient creatures.
On the Canadian side, Félix Auger-Aliassime jumps up one to a new career high.
ON THE UPSWING
Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE): No. 7 =========> No. 5 (Back in the top five with his finals effort in Cincinnati. And most likely a top-four seed in New York).
Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN): No. 9 =========> No. 8 (Auger-Aliassime might not be winning a lot of titles, but he’s making his seeding plenty of times and moves up one to a new career high).
Cameron Norrie (GBR): No. 11 =========> No. 9 (The Brit is back into the top 10 with his effort in Cincinnati).
Nick Kyrgios (AUS): No. 28 =========> No. 26 (More upswing for the Aussie).
Borna Coric (CRO): No. 152 ==================> No. 29 (An incredible leap for the 25-year-old Croat, who won Cincinnati and along with that, gets a seed at the US Open that will put him in good position to make a better run).
Lorenzo Musetti (ITA): No. 33 =========> No. 30 (Musetti lost in the first round in Cincinnati as a qualifier. To the guy, it turns out, who won the whole thing. But he still moves to tie his career best).
Arthur Rinderknech (FRA): No. 64=========> No. 58 (Rinderknech made the final at the Vancouver Challenger).
Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS): No. 75 =========> No. 70 (Kokkinakis lost in the first round in Cincinnati to Jannik Sinner. But it’s been a long road back to come within one of his career best, which he reached back in June of 2015. Another example of massive perseverence).
Constant Lestienne (FRA): No. 94 =========> No. 75 (The 30-year-old Frenchman leaps to a career high after winning the Vancouver Challenger).
Tomas Machac (CZE): No. 158 =========> No. 126 (The 21-year-old, who is the other half of WTA player Katerina Siniakova, won a Challenger in Poland and makes a nice jump).
Vasek Pospisil (CAN): No. 145 =========> No. 132 (Finally a plus in the Pospisil column, as he reaches the semifinals in Vancouver and makes a move. He’ll be in the US Open qualifying this week).
Ben Shelton (USA): No. 229 =========> No. 171 (The 19-year-old University of Florida student makes the third round in Cincinnati and breaks into the top 200 for the first time).
Alexis Galarneau (CAN): No. 241========> No. 230 (Another career best for Galarneau, who beat the No. 1 seed, Yoshihito Nishioka, in his opening round at the Vancouver Challenger. He’s still waiting to see if he squeezes into the US Open qualifying).
ON THE DOWNSWING
Casper Ruud (NOR): No. 5 =========> No. 7
Andrey Rublev: No. 8 =========> No. 11 (A third-round loss to Taylor Fritz ousts Rublev from the top 10 for the first time since Sept. 2020).
Gael Monfils (FRA): No. 22 =========> No. 25 (Monfils had to retire in Montreal because of that foot again, pulled out of Cincinnati and also from the US Open).
Alexander Bublik (KAZ): No. 42 =========> No. 47
Benoit Paire (FRA): No. 110 =========> No. 164 (Paire loses in the first round of qualifying in Cincinnati and drops 180 points from his quarterfinal there a year ago. It’s the biggest chunk of points he had on his resumé).
